Qualification phase
The Grängesberg mine is a Swedish iron mine located in Ludvika, Dalarna which is included in the Swedish electricity price area SE3. The mine is closed and water filled yet retains a height difference between the upper and lower reservoir that is suitable for a mine storage.
Mine Storage has entered into an agreement with British mining company Anglesey Mining Plc together with its 49.75% owned subsidiary Grängesberg Iron AB with the objective to develop a mine storage. As such, the Grängesberg mine could become the first mine storage in the world to become operational as a 15 MW pilot. To put this into context, 15 MW can support the energy need of 35 000 households*.
Mine Storage has developed the Grängesberg mine storage project over the last year and is now planning a public consultation process that includes the municipality, county administrative board, local community, local fishery conservation associations, and other stakeholders.
Location: Bergslagen, Sweden
Size: 15 MW / 30 MWh
Application: Energy trading and anciallary services
Head: 55 meters
Estimated completion year: 2026
Qualification phase
The Bergslagen 2 project is located in the the Swedish electricity price area SE3 and also has potential to make a good pilot case.
The large decomissioned iron mine gives a flexible solution with a good ration of power and energy.
Bergslagen 2 will be able to support the grid with ancillary services and to provide power during peak load hours.
Location: Bergslagen, Sweden
Size: 15 MW / 30 MWh
Application: Energy trading and anciallary services
Head: 50-100 meters
Estimated completion year: 2026
Development phase
The Vånga project is located in the Swedish electricity price area SE4 that is currently struggling with volatile electricity prices.
Mine Storage has secured land rights and is planning to build a 80 MWh mine storage facility. The mine storage can be emptied and filled several times per day. Thus, a mine storage facility in Vånga can become a valuable contribution to the energy system in the region.
The site takes advantage of the height difference between an open quarry located above Lake Ivösjön as the upper reservoir and Lake Ivösjön as the lower reservoir.
Location: Vånga, Skåne, Sweden
Size: 15-30 MW / 60-80 MWh
Application: Energy trading and ancillary services
Head: 120 meters
Estimated completion year: 2027
