Mine Storage has appointed Christian Eldheden as project manager for its flagship mine storage project in Norberg, a pioneering initiative set to become the first of its kind in large-scale renewable energy storage.
Christian joins Mine Storage from the Swedish Fortifications Agency (Fortifikationsverket), where he managed construction projects critical to Sweden’s national defense. He brings more than 17 years of experience from leading roles in energy, infrastructure, water, and sewage projects, spanning feasibility studies through to construction projects of up to 400 MSEK.
“Christian has a very solid background in delivering complex energy and infrastructure projects,” says Thomas Johansson, Co-Founder and CEO of Mine Storage. “As society grows increasingly dependent on resilient energy infrastructure, his experience with security-classified facilities is highly valuable. Combined with his agile way of working, Christian is an excellent fit for a fast-moving company like ours.”
Christian has previously held positions at E.ON, Stockholm Exergi, and Roslagsvatten, all of which manage assets that form part of Sweden’s critical infrastructure. His leadership style is built on combining structure and planning with a strong focus on practical execution.
“I am humbled by the challenge of building a facility that has no precedent anywhere in the world,” says Christian Eldheden. “At the same time, I feel confident we will succeed, working alongside colleagues who combine deep dedication with specialist expertise. My role will be to bring these strengths together to create a facility that could set a new global standard for large-scale energy storage. I am passionate about creating societal value and proud to contribute to this groundbreaking project.”
The Norberg project will convert part of a former iron ore mine at the Morberg fields, together with a decommissioned quarry, into a state-of-the-art pumped hydro storage facility. The site will provide local balancing of renewable generation and critical grid support services. Recognized by the EU Innovation Fund as “unique and pioneering in Europe, with potential global significance,” the project has been awarded an investment grant of 20 MEUR.
